CAPITEL

A UNIQUE PLOT

CAPITEL 2023

Capitel 2023 expresses the most unique representation of the old vines of Segovian Verdejo. The Peña Aguda plot, in Nieva, is characterized by its unique soil; slate, shale, quartzite and calcium silicate rocks in which vines up to 200 years old take root. The vines penetrate between the sheets of slate and extract their essence from them. This pre-phylloxera soil and vineyard give complexity to a wine of exceptional nuances and inimitable depth. A wine that transcends time. A living history of the Segovian Verdejo.

Mild temperatures and early harvest

The autumn of 2022 was marked by mild temperatures and an almost complete absence of frost. The continuation of this temperate weather throughout the winter led to an early vegetative cycle, with the vines beginning to weep in February and March, followed by budding in mid-April. Between May 16 and 20, moderate spring frosts occurred during the early morning hours, although they were consecutive. Flowering began in late May and early June. During the summer, temperatures remained mild, gradually rising from the second half of July and throughout the rest of the season. The overall advancement of the cycle, combined with a warm and dry August, resulted in one of the earliest harvests on record, starting on August 29. At the beginning of September, heavy rains helped the grapes complete their final ripening stage, allowing the harvest to conclude on September 15. The Peña Aguda grape harvest took place on September 13.

A vein of slate

The Capitel vineyard is located in the Peña Aguda plot, of just 1.10 hectares, and sits on a vein of slate of a characteristic dark color found to the south of the town of Nieva. Its geological origin is much older than the sandy soils prevalent in the area: it dates back to the Precambric era, more than 500 million years ago. Some of the Peña Aguda vines are close to 200 years old, which is a historical and viticultural heritage. The viticulture practiced here is of the utmost respect; aimed at preserving a legacy in the form of vines and with the objective of maintaining the purity of this unique Verdejo grape.

Whole clusters and aging on lees

The Peña Aguda grapes were harvested by hand in 12 kg boxes under strict quality control and selection of the grapes. The bunches are pressed whole, without destemming. The indigenous yeasts used in the spontaneous fermentation process reflect the purity and complexity of these grapes over the following weeks. The must fermented in 600-liter French oak barrels, where it remained without being racked, completing 9 months of aging on its lees. Capitel 2023 was bottled in February 2025 and completed 12 months of bottle aging before release. For added protection, the wine contains sulfites.
