Capitel 2022

Vino EcológicoCapitel 2022 expresses the most unique representation of the old vines of Segovian Verdejo. The Peña Aguda plot, in Nieva, is characterized by its unique soil; slate, grauwaca, quartzite and calcium silicate rocks in which vines up to 200 years old take root. The vines penetrate between the sheets of slate and extract their essence from them. This pre-phylloxera soil and vineyard give complexity to a wine of exceptional nuances and inimitable depth. A wine that transcends time. A living history of the Segovian Verdejo.

A complex climatic year

The last quarter of 2021 was rainy and mild. The beginning of 2022 continued the rhythm of the previous months, with hardly any extremely cold days and very little rain.

Vine weeding began at the end of March, but the vines did not bud until the end of April due to low spring rainfall. May was atypical, with high temperatures, which led to rapid phenological growth of the vines, accompanied by an equally rapid flowering in mid-June with a correct fruit set.

The summer was extremely dry and hot, with several heat waves, which caused occasional moments of stress in some of the youngest plants. These characteristics of the cycle also allowed the vines to remain in perfect health, with rapid ripening in August. The Peña Aguda grape harvest took place on September 11.

A vein of slate

The Capitel vineyard is located in the Peña Aguda plot, of just 1.10 hectares, and sits on a vein of slate of a characteristic dark color found to the south of the town of Nieva. Its geological origin is much older than the sandy soils prevalent in the area: it dates back to the Paleozoic era, more than 500 million years ago.

Some of the Peña Aguda vines are close to 200 years old, which is a historical and viticultural heritage.

The viticulture practiced here is of the utmost respect; aimed at preserving a legacy in the form of vines and with the objective of maintaining the purity of this unique Verdejo grape.

Purity and complexity

The Peña Aguda grapes were harvested by hand in 12 kg boxes under strict quality control and selection of the grapes. The bunches are pressed whole, without destemming, in a vertical manual press and the grapes are crushed. The indigenous yeasts used in the spontaneous fermentation process reflect the purity and complexity of these grapes over the following weeks. The must fermented in 228-liter Burgundy-style barrels. The wine then remained in French oak barrels without racking until aging was complete. Capitel 2022 was bottled in February 2024 and completed 12 months of bottle aging before release. For added protection, the wine contains sulfites.
