At Ossian, sustainability is a value that defines us from within. We are heirs to five centuries of winemaking tradition. Each vine is a living memory of this land. Vineyards that have been unchanged for hundreds of years and date back to a time before the phylloxera plague devastated the European continent. We maintain a strong commitment to guard and protect this natural heritage that we have inherited. We seek to express the uniqueness of a landscape full of history and value and work all processes with a sustainable approach.
As a result of this effort, Ossian Vines and Wines has renewed the Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection (SWfCP) certification, first achieved in 2023 and updated every two years. A recognition that reflects our firm commitment to environmentally friendly viticulture and winemaking.
The Spanish Wine Federation (FEV) awards this seal to wineries committed to sustainable development and is the evolution of the Wineries for Climate Protection program, launched in 2015 as the first specific certification for wineries focused on environmental sustainability. An initiative that began as an approach focused on environmental criteria and has been maturing to incorporate broader and more demanding standards, in tune with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Today, this commitment also encompasses social, economic and governance dimensions, in line with the principles of the fivefold bottom line that guide our work at Alma Carraovejas and, by extension, at Ossian Vines and Wines.
The certification verifies sustainability actions in the environmental, social, governance and economic fields
Specifically, in the assessment of the governance and economic dimensions, the latter based on efficiency and resilience, we have achieved the maximum score awarded by the seal.
In the social dimension, which includes criteria such as the promotion of quality working conditions, the development of initiatives to attract and retain talent, fair treatment of suppliers and producers, as well as relations with the local community and the environment, we have achieved 80% of the score, exceeding the score obtained in the first year by more than nine points. This result also reflects our commitment to food safety and the promotion of responsible consumption, key elements for integral sustainability.
Finally, in the environmental dimension, which measures action measures in areas such as emissions reduction, renewable energies, water management and waste, Ossian has an action plan towards decarbonization with defined short and medium-term objectives. This plan includes specific measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, optimize discharges, manage water efficiently, improve energy efficiency and minimize waste.
In parallel, we have developed a roadmap focused on soil conservation and the promotion of biodiversity in the different Ossian vineyards. As a result of this comprehensive approach, in the Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection assessment, we obtained a score of 89.5%, improving on the data from the first assessment where we achieved 70%.
By obtaining this seal we reinforce our firm and continuous commitment to sustainability. At Ossian our priority is to respect the environment as much as possible with organic viticulture and biodynamic practices, trying to minimize the impact on the environment. We also ensure the best sustainable development in the construction of the new winery where energy efficiency measures are being implemented.
These sustainable development practices are applied throughout the value chain of our products, from the origin of the raw material until it reaches the consumer. This approach includes the active collaboration of our suppliers so that all parts of the process comply with the highest environmental, social and ethical standards.
