• Ossian becomes the second winery in the Alma Carraovejas ecosystem to earn this certification

At Ossian Vides y Vinos, we’ve been awarded Demeter certification for Biodynamic Agriculture—one of the most demanding international accreditations for sustainability. This certification validates our philosophy of understanding the vineyard not as a single entity, but as a living ecosystem that includes the root system, soil microbiology, and the fauna and flora surrounding the vines.

This recognition reflects our commitment to preserving a unique viticultural heritage, with centuries-old vines, some more than 200 years old.

“Working according to biodynamic principles allows us to have a more balanced vineyard, with living soils and vines that fully express their potential,” explain Ossian’s technical directors, Javier Blasco and Almudena Calvo. “Depending on the year, we adapt our treatments to support the vineyard rather than force it.”

What does Demeter certification in Biodynamic Agriculture mean?

The Demeter certification represents the highest standard within organic production. It requires comprehensive vineyard management aimed at strengthening the connection between cultivation, biodiversity, and the surrounding environment—creating greater harmony among these elements and fostering the plants’ natural balance and nutrition.

At Ossian, we apply biodynamic preparations such as 501 silica and the Maria Thun preparation, which strengthen the vines and improve soil structure. We also guide our vineyard and winery work according to natural rhythms and the energies that shape the life cycle of the vine.

Starting with the 2025 vintage, our wines will proudly carry the Demeter seal—a symbol of a way of working that looks toward the future.

Ossian Vides y Vinos: history, origin, and heritage

This year marks a milestone for Ossian. After inaugurating our new winery, the result of a significant investment in rural development, we celebrate another major achievement: Demeter certification in Biodynamic Agriculture.

From the very beginning, our project has been guided by organic viticulture principles, always with the goal of respecting, valuing, and enhancing a unique Spanish viticultural legacy, with vines that are over two centuries old. Our long-standing commitment, validated by years of organic certification, now reaches new heights with the Demeter biodynamic seal.

This new recognition reaffirms our conviction that wine only makes sense when it’s born from healthy, living soil.

Ossian’s vineyard covers 120 hectares across 11 municipalities, with Nieva at its core. Surrounded by pine forests in the Segovian countryside, the vines take root in sandy soils and streaks of slate.

Alma Carraovejas: a shared vision for biodynamic agriculture

At Alma Carraovejas, we’ve been incorporating biodynamic agriculture principles into our winemaking for years. Each project moves forward on this path while adapting to the unique characteristics of its own landscape—but all share the same purpose: to preserve soil vitality and reinforce the natural balance of each vineyard by carefully tending to every stage of the process.

With this achievement, Ossian becomes the second Alma Carraovejas winery to earn Demeter certification, following Bodega Marañones (DO Madrid), which received its certification in the spring of 2025.

The Demeter certification in Biodynamic Agriculture is not just an accomplishment—it’s a statement of principles: to work with respect, integrity, and responsibility toward the vineyard and everything that surrounds it.
