HISTORIC SEGOVIAN VINEYARD

OSSIAN 2023

Ossian 2023 represents a mosaic of unique vineyard plots that have preserved centuries of winemaking tradition on the terraces of the Voltoya River. These century-old vines, some up to 200 years old, safeguard the essence of their varietal diversity and a nearly vanished heritage. The 2023 vintage faithfully reflects the elegance, complexity, and freshness of an exceptional pre-phylloxera Verdejo. A landscape that has preserved the identity of Segovian Verdejo for centuries. Genetic diversity hidden in each vineyard. Surprising delicacy. Length in a rested finish with which the character of the authentic Verdejo appears.

Mild temperatures and early harvest

The autumn of 2022 was marked by mild temperatures and an almost complete absence of frost. The continuation of this temperate weather throughout the winter led to an early vegetative cycle, with the vines beginning to weep in February and March, followed by budding in mid-April. Between May 16 and 20, moderate spring frosts occurred during the early morning hours, although they were consecutive. Flowering began in late May and early June. During the summer, temperatures remained mild, gradually rising from the second half of July and throughout the rest of the season. The overall advancement of the cycle, combined with a warm and dry August, resulted in one of the earliest harvests on record, starting on August 29. At the beginning of September, heavy rains helped the grapes complete their final ripening stage, allowing the harvest to conclude on September 15.

Small vineyards on the Voltoya terraces

For the production of Ossian, grapes from a selection of plots spread around the Voltoya terraces are used: Nieva, Nava de la Asunción, Moraleja de Coca, Santiuste de San Juan Bautista, Bernuy de Coca, Villagonzalo de Coca, Aldeanueva del Codonal, Aldehuela del Codonal, Codorniz, Melque de Cercos and Ochando. The soils mark the radical difference of this environment: the sands and boulders prevented the arrival of phylloxera. A harsh climate, with freezing winters and hot summers, characterize the development of the authentic verdejo. The vines planted centuries ago have a unique genetic diversity. This biological richness brings a greater complexity to the interpretation of each plot.

Vinification by plots

Ossian is the result of assembling the individual vinification of each small plot. A viticulture that respects the character of vines up to 200 years old. The grapes are harvested in small crates and after a light pressing, the must is transferred to vats and wooden barrels of between 228 and 600 liters. The indigenous yeasts and spontaneous fermentation reflect the purity and complexity of these grapes over the following weeks. Ossian 2023 was assembled and bottled in the summer of 2024 after approximately nine months of aging on its lees. Contains sulfites.
